Shay was born in New York in 1731, to an Irish family from Dublin. His mother died in childbirth and was therefore raised by his aunt, as his father was often engaged in maritime activities. Shay moved to the Devenport estate, where he was trained in the traditions of the Brotherhood, until he and his friend Liam stole a brig from the British Army known as the Morrigan.
