At the beginning of the series, Powder, Vi and the two adoptive brothers attempt to rob the penthouse of a Piltovian scientist, Jayce, but in an attempt to steal some arcane crystals, the girl accidentally causes an explosion and, while managing to escape by returning to the underground city, the quartet involuntarily provokes an unbridled hunt for the culprit by the authorities of Piltover that pushes Vander to decide to turn himself in to calm the waters; taking advantage of the situation, however, the ambitious criminal boss Silco - once a close friend of the man - captures him and has the agents to whom he surrendered, in an attempt to foment a new rebellion. Vi, Mylo and Claggor go to the rescue of their putative father and, in order to help them, Powder detonates the arcane crystals causing an explosion in which all but Vi perish. Furious and desperate, her sister hits her and screams "bad luck" ("jinx") and then walks away in tears. Believing herself abandoned, Powder seeks comfort in Silco's arms. About seven years later, Powder, now nineteen, adopted the new name of "Jinx", was raised as a daughter by Silco - now head of the underground - and is his right hand in smuggling, especially the mutagen drug. Shimmer, however, is still haunted by the memory of her sister and when, seeing her in a hallucination, she unintentionally messes up a job, she decides to fix it by storming the Piltover Academy on 200th Progress Day to steal a Hextech gem and deliver it to the "father", killing six officers and prompting survivor, Caitlyn Kiramman, to start a personal investigation by freeing Vi - who has been locked up for years - to help her.
