Daenerys was born in Dragonstone in the 284th year after the conquest of the Seven Kingdoms and she is the youngest and the only daughter of King Aerys II Targaryen and his younger sister and consort Queen Rhaella, who in turn is the younger sister of the Rhaegar and Viserys. Daenerys is conceived during one of the many violent rapes that Aerys inflicts on Rhaella shortly before Robert Baratheon's rebellion, known as the Usurper War, which is followed by the defeat of House Targaryen.

Before her birth, her pregnant mother and brother Viserys seek safety away from King's Landing, the capital of the kingdom, by moving to the ancient family fortress of Dragonstone Island. Shortly thereafter, Dragonstone falls into the hands of Stannis Baratheon's rebel forces. Daenerys and Viserys manage to escape and are smuggled into the free city of Braavos by Ser Willem Darry, a loyal knight to the ruling house. Upon Ser Willem's death, his servants drive Daenerys and Viserys out of the house. In the years that follow, the two brothers move across the nine free cities in search of help, which earned Viserys the nickname of Beggar King. Having become a young man, Viserys is often cruel and violent towards Daenerys, whom he sees as a "bargaining chip" to achieve his sole purpose: to recover the crown. This manic obsession causes Daenerys to become convinced that regaining possession of the Seven Kingdoms is the purpose of her life. Despite the abuses suffered, however, Daenerys will always remember that during her childhood Viserys treated her well, showing her a certain sweetness and for this reason she decided, later, to give one of her dragons the name of her brother (Viserion).
